I says something on CNBC on night that though France and Britain have
less hours worked per person, they have more productivity per person.
I'll try to find facts (or at least studies) on this if anyone is
interested

In 2001 the US average was 40.2 hours per week (42.9 for men and 34.5
for women).  Japan's average was 42.2 hours per week (46.7 for men and
35.7 for women).

I guess it depends on your perspective.  In France the number of hours
worked only 38.4 but unemployment also pushes 10%.  Number of hours
worked per week is a pretty common measurement of the health of the
labor market. Many people consider jobs a good thing.
