In 2001 the US average was 40.2 hours per week (42.9 for men and 34.5 for
women).  Japan's average was 42.2 hours per week (46.7 for men and 35.7
for women).

I guess it depends on your perspective.  In France the number of hours
worked only 38.4 but unemployment also pushes 10%.  Number of hours worked
per week is a pretty common measurement of the health of the labor market.
Many people consider jobs a good thing.
