I havn't had a chance to play lately, so please pardon my ignorance, but
do the new notradesize/fulltradesize options do nothing for these
problems? They seem like a powerful incentive to have nice vertical
cities to me.

For me its building only settlers, military units, caravans and wonders. N=
o citiyimprovements.
