Why the static version?

I downloaded the setiathome-3.03.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar file and
have had it running perfectly.

The easiest way is to download it directly to the (Linux) pc where it will
be run.
As Benjamin said below, once it is on the pc, simply untar it (using the
command "tar xvf setiathome-3.03.i686-pc-linux-gnu-gnulibc2.1.tar ) and it
creates a subdirectory with the really long name. Then cd to that directory
and run it using the "./setiathome"command.

The really important part is
     1. You MUST be in the directory where the program will be executed to
run it. It creates several files in the local directory and has to have
write permissions in that directory to create and maintain the files.
      2. If you want it to run at all times (I have 3 sessions running
constantly on the same machine), you need to set up a directory for each and
then you need to set up a script to run them at boot time. I can send you
directions on how to do this if you want.
      3. If you run it from the command line then try to log out, it often
will kill seti even if you have placed it in the background. This can be
resolved if you know how.
