I've used a 2gb drive in a 386 before...
And I've used 17gb and larger drives in 486's before.

The BIOS is irrelevant except, as Steve mentioned, during boot.  So, as he
mentioned, just make sure that the boot partition is in the first 540mb of
the drive.
