I like the caravan idea much more than the trireme one.  Trireme is quite
ridiculous, it's much easier to wait for caravels than waste tons of
triremes before they become veteran.

But keeping caravan options separate is good.  Maybe even split the patch 
into battle units, then spies, then settler etc.  And make sure to feed 
the patches through RT.
