Ok here's a work in progress.
Nothing has changed layout-wise with the exception of the close button
becoming a red 'X' graphic and moving to the top left.
Otherwise the big change is the replacement of the monchrome
background grey with a gradient. This IMO opinion makes a massive
aesthetic improvement and was a much better idea than trying
incorporate various textures into the design. Simplicity wins out
again.
I tried gradients of different colours but none looked as nice or as
effective as the grey. So I guess there's a reason why all those
GUIs on the KDE and Gnome sites seem to love this colour.
However I do agree with Raimar that colour is what makes a GUI come to
life. Various experiments have led me to the black/green/yellow
combination which I think looks really striking. Have a look at the
Food Storage and Production progress bars.
The city list in the lower right is an experiment to lose grey and add
more colour. I think it's a step in the right direction but the
scrollbar is still crap. Compare it to the two Worklist lists on the
right and let me know what you think.
The scrollbars still need a massive redesign and so do the text
buttons - either to be converted into image buttons, better looking
text buttons, or preferably a combination of both. I really need
some nice looking images, preferably no more than 20x20 (at least for
640x480), for buttons like 'Buy', 'Sell', 'Centre' and all that. If
you come across any nice examples or even freely distributable ones
can you post them here?
