That's the way CTP works.  You can *lose the game* without warning
(e.g., if an enemy wonder completion causes all your cities to gain
massive unhappiness and revolt).  I've had it happen to me.  (It was a
single-city challenge game, so I only had one city to lose....)

Well I stopped playing CTP (multiplayer) because I usually lost the game
when I was fiddling with my tax rates ( or even government) during the other
players turn. Not a fun rule. ( Besides, the space orbit graphics draw too
slowly.)
