there isn't a protocol specifically for an optical mouse ... my old one 
(logitech) used the IMPS/2 protocol ... the mouse/keyb combo i had 
before that (which wasn't optical) used the same protocol ...

what does it do?  does it move sporadically?  that's the most common 
effect of using the wrong protocol.  does anything at all happen?  are 
the batteries ok?  are you using the right device in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
