I tried each protocal, but there was nothing for an optical mouse.  I
may try to move the mouse to another computer and see if it is even
good.  When it first boots, the red light will light, but as soon as the
post is finished, it goes off.

sounds like you're using the wrong mouse protocol, then.

Try some of the various PS/2 protocols available.
