There is no "optical mouse" protocol. An optical mouse, roller mouse,
touchpad, etc, all speak the same "language" to the computer.  The
computer has no idea (or care) of how it _physically_ interprets movement,
so long as it knows how to move the cursor around.

It's just a matter of determining exactly which protocol to use. 
Sometimes, I've had varying levels of sucess by adding or removing gpm
to/from the equasion, and changing the repeat protocol.

Generally, I have better luck with gpm, but occassionally, X has done a
better job w/o gpm.

That might be something to play with, too.
