what's the best way to keep a log? i mean, if i say "ssh to datility" was
broken during these hours, they could easily say "maybe it's just a problem
with datility's connection or the connection somewhere inbetween" (read:
not our fault)... i wouldn't necessarily blame them, since many of their
techs that i have talked to are relatively clueless (but not all, it's just
that i rarely get good ones)... my way of knowing when i go down is 1.) if
i'm in an ssh session to lloydnet.org (hosted @ datility), it locks, 2.) IM
goes down (which i realize isn't a 100% reliable way of telling if a
connection is alive or not), 3.) ping to google stops... my thinking is
that this is a fairly good indicator, since i'm not just testing
connections to one network (for instance datility)...

anyone know of any software that will do basic monitoring and logging
automatically? preferably either windows (yah, yah, i know) or
freebsd-supported software (my router/firewall is freebsd)... also, using
more than just ping is a plus, since i have pings blocked on lloydnet...

thanks,
gLaNDix

p.s. i tried some shareware stuff on my windows box, and i had about a
dozen mini-outtages stacked up in less than a day!
