I need to install Samba 2.2.2. on a box that has RH 7.2 on it. RH7.2 comes
with Samba 2.1a.

I tried:
rpm -ivh samba ... .rpm and got:
"error: samba 2.2.2 needs libreadline.so.4.1"
RH 7.2 has libreadline.so.4.2 (and a link from libreadline.so.4 to
libreadline.so.4.2 in /usr/lib/.)

Couldn't find libreadline, but found readline-4.1-9.i386.rpm and tried
to rpm it. Got several errors saying conflict with libreadline-4 and
libhistory-4, plus conflicts with some info and man pages.

Made a symbolic link from libreadline.so.4.2 to libreadline.so.4.1 and
tried to rpm samba again - same result.

I could un-rpm readline.4.2, but it might take a lot of testing to
determine if anything else was dependent on .so.4.2. When I run ldd
libreadline.so.4.2, I get a listing of libc.so.6 and ld-linux.so.2.
Not sure what this means.

Any suggestions?

Actually, it's quite difficult to persuade people
that you are bombing them for their own good.
