Hi, Ian.  Unfortunately, I am not in possession of an Intel Mac, so I  
am unable to even attempt to reproduce your problem.

A shot in the dark would be to try and re-install X11.  Since you  
have Xcode, perhaps you can also try installing the X11 developer  
package in addition to the X11 user package?
