I finished installing Fink and I have successfully installed and run
freeciv that way, so that is the developer workaround I guess.
Unfortunately, it is version 1.14. The normal installs of freeciv
still completely crash my machine so I am uninstalling them and going
with the Fink copy. If I get a chance to send more information from
the error logs about what is going on I will.

I have tried both versions of freeciv and they both cause this problem. I need xcode to work, but I am willing to try to help chase down the fatal interaction. My machine is the intel mac, so maybe something with xcode is not quite right. It seems like X11 is no longer started automatically, so I have tried starting it first but it makes no difference.

Yes, Fink will work. However, my binary distribution of Freeciv for Mac OS X is built using DarwinPorts. There is some information about this here.
