Under the current rules, the one-time bonus is about equal to the value
of the long-term trade, if you're establishing a new trade route between
nearby cities.  If you're replacing an old one, or establishing a new
route between distant cities, the one-time bonus dwarfs the trade
benefit.  Also, caravans are the only way to convert production into
bulbs.
