I'm not so sure, too many colors become really distracting.
Besides, I'm kind of trained to look at those numbers anyway. It's if the
granary is getting too low that doesn't really register to me.

Don't do that. What happens if you have a city sized 70? (or 25...)
If you want to do that go back to the frame around the entire dialog.
The original motivation for this was saving space. Getting rid of that
frame saved some real estate. This might be unfortunate for people using
window managers who don't have title bars...
The frame really doesn't take up that much space though.
