It's not really related to radio interference... it's related to line
quality. A singal is only good for a certian distance. This holds true of
practically any type of signal you use... whether it's a vocal signal
(shouting at someone), a radio/TV signal (broadcasts only go for so many
miles), electric/electronic signal, etc.

When xDSL, you're using an electronic signal over (traditionally) copper
wires. Unless the signal is boosted along the line somewhere, you, after a
certian distance, will not be able to communicate. Standard telephone lines
(the one you talk over or use a modem over) is boosted every so often, so
you can actually hear the person you're talking to.

The reason for the limit with xDSL is that to boost the signal with xDSL
prohibits the advantages you gain by sing the xDSL technology. So... there
is the distance factor.

And, according to SWB, it's more like 5000 or 7000 feet (1-1.5 miles) for
ADSL service in Wichita. Now, maybe for the higher bandwidth stuff you need
to be closer than that, I don't know.
