Figured I'd weigh in:

I started with a copy of RH 5.1 from the "Linux Unleashed" book.
Stumbled through an install. After 2 hours on the phone with a buddy,
got my modem working, X working, and even the mouse working. But I
didn't really understand much at all. I had no idea where to find files
and what the configuration really was.

Had a hard time getting things to work right. Make didn't work (!)
Couldn't get gcc working. Couldn't work my way through the rpm process
to put new stuff on the machine.

Gave up, went to Barnes and Noble, bought Volkerding's "Linux:
Installation and Configuration." (it comes with Slackware 3.5).

Bottom line: Excellent book. Matches the install process exactly.
Installation proceeded smoothly. The book covers configuration issues
in detail. It lists every single package that Slackware would try to
install, and described them. Yes, I had to edit files by hand with vi.
But the book steps through everything, and now I understand alot more
about my system than I ever did under RH. Tarballs are easy. Make
works fine. Modem fired right up.

There are some things I miss a little, like the graphical print config
tool, and the little disk mounter/umounter that runs under X. But I
know my system now.

Just one Slackers opinion..
