Indeed, this is the single largest fault of Debian.  It is being
addressed, but slowly.  2.1 has made big strides to support multi-CDs
(the distro is now 4 or 5 CDs for i386 alone).  3.0 hopefully will
have a lot of autodetect things, and maybe some more graphical install
ideas.  Lots of ideas are being discussed.

For installation, take a look at http://www.linuxpress.com/ (although
this may now be dated for 2.1).  Take a look at
http://www.debian.org/releases/slink/ for about a dozen documentation
things for 2.1.

Especially look at the Install Manuals.  There is work on a Debian
Tutorial for the future as well.

If you need help, hop on irc.us.debian.org, channel #debian, and ask.
You can sometimes find me on there as "CosmicRay", BTW.  I know that
several other ACLUG people hang out on that IRC network as well.
