I did get the Compaq setup disks and was still unable to mount the cdrom.

I believe I have heard this too. And the 7.2 machine I am using now also has
"ide-cdrom version 4.59" in /proc/ide/hdc/driver.

When I was unable to get the cdrom mounted and because of other problems
(neither KDE or windowmaker would give me a decent X) I gave up on RH 7.2
and went back to RH 6.2. This loaded easily and I have a good KDE desktop,
although it is the older KDE. The cdrom mounts like it should.

I have loaded 7.2 on larger, slightly faster machines with more memory and
had excellent results, so I must attribute my problems to not enough memory
(I had only 32M and redhat says 64M minimum) and not enough disk space (I was
trying a 1.2GB hard drive - I have put it on 1.6GB drives successfully).

I didn't realize, until this little exercize, how much difference there was
between RH 6.2 and 7.2. Many new programs and many updates. Gimp has many
improvements and other programs are improved. 7.2 requires lots of disk
space and likes lots o memory, but it makes a really nice workstation. I
rarely use win98 anymore.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions,
bruce
