In my dmesg, hdd is correctly identified, but the second mention is left out.

    ide0: BM-DMA at 0x1000-0x1007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0x1008-0x100f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:DMA
hda: WDC AC11200L, ATA DISK drive
hdd: BCD E520C, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: 2503872 sectors (1282 MB) w/256KiB Cache, CHS=621/64/63, DMA
ide-floppy driver 0.97

/proc/ide/ide1/hdd/ has five files (six in my working system) which all but
one seem to be right. The last file /hdd/driver says (none). In my working
system, a cd-rom driver is listed. Since /proc isn't something that can be
just modified, I am stuck here. The sixth file in my working system is
/hdd/capacity and the contents are (0).

The thought came to me that perhaps the bios is set up for just one ide and
maybe the install somehow bypasses this while the system installed does not.
My next move is to try to find out how to get to the Compaq bios. None of
the usual keystrokes seem to work.

Thanks a lot, Greg
