I hate to tell you this but on most Compaq machines you need to have a BIOS
BOOT disk since it seems that you have formatted over the BIOS BOOT SECTOR
of your systems harddrive when you installed Linux. Other wise it should be
'F-10' key.

You will need to go the Compaq/HP tech support and find the correct download
that will create the needed BIOS disk image onto a FLOPPY [on a DOS/Windows
machine].... the first time you boot up to the 'A' drive the program will
then try to write the standard Compaq BIOS BOOT SECTOR to your 'C' harddrive
if you hit any key other than the prompted key 'not to create', at least on
the five different Compaq machines that I have had the "FUN" of working on.
