thanks for your reply, the following is what transpires

I boot : linux 1
.. starting single user mode..

I enter:
passwd root
the system replies:
New UNIX password:
I enter xxxxxx,
the system replies:
Retype new UNIX password:
I enter xxxxxx (same as above),
the system replies:
password: all authentication tokens updated successfully.
I "exit" single user mode by entering:
exit.
....

the system 'reboots' and then responds:
Login:
I enter:
root
the system replies:
Password:
I enter: xxxxxx (same as above),
the system replies:
Login incorrect.

Please note:
I can successfully change other 'user ids's passwords following the
above procedures,
I have also tried the above procedure without specifying "root" (using
the 'default').
Note: i have included the first line of my /etc/passwd file:
root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
