Single user mode won't guarantee the fix for the password problem,
especially if you are really security conscious and set password for single
user mode as well.  Otherwise, most distros I know don't set password to
single user mode by default, so it's easy to get superuser access to the
machine once you get the physical access to the machine.  Then it's matter
of issuing passwd and set new one up.
