you don't need to do 'su' once you are in single user
mode ..
you can see # sign
and just issuing passwd <enter>
will change root password for you ..

check whether you can get in single user mode or not
see you should have # prompt once you use linux 1 
in lilo and booted .. wait for some time after booting
it automatically switches you to super user mode
