Hello, Mike,

Thanks for the excellent synopsis. It's reassuring to learn that some of the people behind FreeCiv want to take it in a "civilised" direction and not concentrate exclusively on war. I don't think my wife would have spent as many early morning hours playing Civ against me ( and beating me ) if it had been strictly a wargame - her favourite Wonders were the Great Wall and the United Nations. For myself, I only played the "Bloodlust" option twice in the years we played the game, and found it thouroughly unsatisfying.

Believe me, it is doubly reassuring to learn that some of the players actually agree with my point of view. You can read more about my effort to cure ICS at

http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/6673/freeciv/nopox.html

and it should also appear on the Freeciv website very soon.

So, if FreeCiv were to become a wargame, I would drop it;
I would be interested in seeing a poll of player's sentiments in this regard - has it been done, yet?

There is currently a poll running on the website concerning ICS, and approximately half of those who responded said they dislike smallpox. However, people can't seem to agree on the best way to fix it. Furthermore, most Freeciv players are so used to it that they would oppose any effort to curb expansion and/or warfare, and it's going to be a long and hard battle to change all that.

One can only hope.

Mike
