yeah, I think I was lucky to have libXpm installed on the Solaris
system I use.  Last time I tried something which needed it was
hopeless.

In my (limited - so contradict me) experience of programming in X,
hardcoding an xpm handler wouldn't be so difficult.  But then,
hardcoding the whole thing in xlib wouldn't be so hard - it's not like
the windowing is at all fancy with the Xaw client.
