yes, if there is black on both sides of the map viewport, then you know
that your window is _big enough_ to get the whole map. It also makes it
more intuitive to see where it wraps.

For me, it takes zero effort to center the map around the part of the map
I want to look at. If I'm close the the edge of the map, I just
right-click. The fact that the overhead view has the same issue (not
resizable), is another reason why multiple tile images is not worth the
effort.
