But you still have to have a unique identifier per person.  The karma
system only works if you have that.

But the e-mail thing is not so good.  Anybody running their own mail
server can basically have infinite possible e-mail addresses.
Somewhere you have to draw the line and see if it is "good enough".
This might be that point.
