What if the "classic" tiles were included in cvs, but not
in the release tarball?  So old-timers could still get them
easily (and use ./civ --tiles classic) but we don't increase
to size of the release distribution too much by including
too many tilesets?

(Have you tried the brunus tiles?  I think they're sufficiently
similar to the classic tiles that one still recognises everything
immediately, but things are generally improved.  I agree that the
dwp units are quite different style to the classic units, so there
may be a familiarity/taste problem there.)
