My comment was not based on the "media" speed as rated by the
manufacturer. It is difficult (if not impossible)to find any media rated
less than 12X today.

I was referring to the actual speed used in burning, and my 24X cd
burner will only burn at 16X on a cd that is rated at 8X. (I still am
using up some that I bought almost 2 years ago because they were behind
ones I had bought since then.)

The cost of the media is really not a factor, the time involved becomes
the critical one if you are making several copies. True, if you insist
on using only the best media then its price is a factor, but not if you
use the readily available quality.

My 2X burner used to take 40 minutes per CD, thus 2 hours to copy 3 CDs.
And even if you could do it while doing other things (and I did) it
still involves that much elapsed time. Most of us are too involved in
other things to dedicate 4 hours to make 2 copies of the distro that we
plan to sell. Thus the faster burner and ability to make copies quicker
becomes of great benefit. 5 minutes per disk, 3 disks per set --> 4
copies per hour. A major benefit and thus the price (time) per copy
drops dramatically.

Media cost also has dropped to just under $0.12 per disk for the 16X
disks as compared to over $1.50 per disk (8X in bulk) as little as 2
years ago.

on the 2X burner the fixation took 2 minutes.
on my 24X burner (burning an 8X cd at 16X) it takes 21 seconds.
