There is another way.
When hit counters first became popular some web sites provided a hit
counter you could link to. If you have a counter hosted one place and
your home page links to it you are not stuck with just the services the
ISP provides.
The hosting site for the counter would have to provide the
database/CGI/PHP services but not nesessarily COX.
The only drawback to this is that now you have 2 sites to link to, but
that is not usually an issue for the tiny data link on the counter.
