Yea, could cause bad things to happen...

I think I'd use a printer port and some latches myself, though the
serial approach is something I had not thougt of.  Most of my problem
will be getting data in to the control program.  Small analog signals
are rough to deal with in a noisy auto enviroment, and some of the
sensors may be hard to place. (Head temps, cam position, manifold temp,
pressure etc...) Most of the outputs are fairly simple on-off type
things and are usually large signal.  (Timing advance, fuel injectors,
field currents and such).

How about USB?  Does it offer any advantages aside from not burning an
interrupt per device?  What is the effective bandwith available?  Does
Linux support it yet?
