Did you copy the kernel and related files to /boot?  Did you edit
/etc/lilo.conf and run lilo?

I've used 2.4.3 and 2.4.5 for my debian machine, and haven't had any
problems like this.  Since this problem occurs across different kernels
and architectures, I think there just may be something you are leaving
out.
