Just finished my first attempt to compile a kernel.
Downloaded the 2.2.18 tar.gz kernel, untarred it into /usr/src.
Thought I knew what I was asking for in menuconfig.
Make dep and make clean seemed to go ok
Make zlilo ran for 30 minutes or more and ended up with:
************
tools build bootsect compressed/vmlinux.out CURRENT > Zimage
root device is (3, 5)
boot sector 512 bytes
setup is 1288 bytes
system is 539 KB
system is too big. try bzimage or modules
make [1] *** [zImage] error 1
make [1] leaving directory '/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [zlilo] error 2
*************

Machine boots up with the old kernel and seems to be intact.

Have almost 12 GB unused on hda5, the / partition. The boot partition, hda1,
is 23 MB.

Is it trying to put the whole system in the boot partition? Or what is wrong?
Need some help, bruce
