It got their attention so they did not ignore the problem.
They kept saying that they had done nothing to cause the change, but
when I complained something changed again and the stable connection
resumed.

They kept blaming my system since it was Linux and they did not support
Linux. However, I made no changes and the connection became stable
again.

With dhcp, the ip is leased to a particular mac address. If that lease
has not expired and you restore the connection you will get the same
address.
