So nobody is willing to defend any other distros? There are other good
distros out there as well. Slackware, OpenLinux, Suse, Turbolinux,
Stampede, Mandrake, etc, etc....

I like Slackware, just because that was the first linux distro I installed 5
or 6 years ago. I still like it to an extent.

I also gained familiarity with RedHat....

OpenLinux was quite easy to configure a few things for which I had some
struggles in the past. But it seems they are too configured. I saw too
many proprietary / customized for OpenLinux software.

TurboLinux is my favorite as for multilingual support, especially for far
Eastern languages.

And that's all the linux I've tried so far.

And as for ease of installations, none of these really make any difference
to me any more, since they've all done great jobs in making them easy.

What I don't like is all the dependency to the packaging system. I like
downloading tarballs off the net and compiling them, instead of grabbing
some rpm or tgz package and let the package manager handle the installs.
It's not much more reason other than just maintaining my low ego.... but I
don't intend to change my practice. So rpm system on my RedHat box really
don't mean much any more.

So how would Debian handle such situation?

I may not fix that's not already broken, but I would really take any of your
comments as valuable info when I choose my next linux when I get my 2nd box
which I will make as dedicated linux box.
