[Freeciv] Install help needed

I'm having a little problem getting freciv server or client running.  I'm a 
total Linux novice so be gentle.

Running:  Red Hat 5.1, KDE1.1.1, newer GTK+

Background:  I downloaded the compressed file, uncomressed, compiled, 
installed, etc.  I believe it installed into 'usr\local\bin'.  Anyway, when I 
try to click on the Freeciv server icon in KDE nothing happens (no process 
shows up on the process monitor or anything).

I would really love to play this game and join the freeciv community but I'm 
kinda stuck right now.  Any help will be gladly taken.
