You can observe the planet when you have satellites. You can land
precisely where you want (Apollo and moon). And since the tech is
quite advantages (you have engineers or some newer unit) you can do
quite a lot in these turns till the other player are coming.

One thing to offset this would be that building the space ship is
_very_ expensive. And may also make the nation vulnerable.
