I fixed many of Mike's complaints, most importantly:
1. Free status (well spotted, Mike!)
2. Make path-length dynamic.

Introduced loads more comments (including overlapping).

Checked Raimar's earlier emails for complaints, didn't find any unfixed ones.

Introduced a debugging call to pf_print_path, should be removed before
committing.

Best wishes,
G.
