Civ1 rivers are a separate terrain type. Civ2 rivers are a modifier
to other terrain types (such as grassland, forest, etc.) -- or maybe
they flow *between* the tiles instead of through the centers of them.
I can't recall precisely, since it's been a few years since I played
Civ2.

SMAC rivers flow through the centers of land tiles (of any type),
must terminate in ocean, and give +1 energy (trade) in addition to
the movement cost reduction.

CTP rivers flow through the centers of land tiles (of any type),
must terminate in ocean, and give +5 food/production/trade. They
give a movement cost of 1/2 instead of Civ1/Civ2/SMAC's 1/3.
