I used to fall prey to AI chariots in Civ1, and again in experimenting
with various configurations in FreeCiv lately, in both cases to find out
how long I can hold off on creating defensive units. I have tried to do
back unto the AI the same but it doesnt seem to work. Mind you, for me
attack almost never seems to work better than development... until the
warmongers arrive. By which time I hopefully have cancerproof suffragets
and vast swarms of shakespearean actors ready to engage in a Peckinpah
epic... ;-)

In Civ1 I always thought the whole feudal thing a dead end, as indeed it
was. However if British Traditional Witches and Magick turn out to be
powerful Madison Avenue forces, maybe there is something to it? Or are
they just obsolete loyalists rather than farsighted mystics/mages?
Maybe the Civ1 configuration is the way to go, feudalism and knights could
be nice theatrical ego-boost for players who glorify combat, a nice way to
distract them while the scientists solve the world's problems. Bread and
circuses? Violent videogames that somehow do not lead to desire to go out
and enact violence physically? Hmmm. Back in the 60's 70's or so I heard
claims that Sweden making pornography legal lowered rape and sex-crime
rates. Any truth in that? If so why dont other nations follow suit? Even
if it is true, would snuff flicks and videogames do the same for violent
crime?
