Why not get rid of filenames? We have already:
  saveturns variable
  savename variable
  seed and randseed variable
  a good and detailed file naming mechanism
Suggestion: only have a unique name for each game. The server
is capable of parsing the savegame directory and offering the
client a collection of game names plus a collection of savegames/
versions/years for each game.

Just an idea.
