I now have

style "help_text"
{
  font = "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*"
}

in

/home/chris/freeciv.rc

but it doesn't help.

Also, the FAQ http://www.freeciv.org/faq/#QA33 
describes a command which doesn't work either (for me):

chris@max:~ > LANG= civclient -xrm "Freeciv*font: 8x16"
Unrecognized option: "-xrm"
chris@max:~ >
