I am very interested in this kind of thing.  One thing I think it is
important that we do is make sure the information is not sent to the
client which it should not know about.  Otherwise we run the risk of
someone hacking a client and being able to cheat.  Any patches that
would make more sense of this would be good IMO.

Everquest (not a game I play, but one I know a lot about) suffers from
this.  The server sends all kinds of information to the client which
the client does not display.  But this has not stopped people from
writting small clients of their own that can find out loads of
information that they shouldn't know.
