Second way is not real.
How often did you managed to reach Apollo and build spaceship ?
I had real space race only 1 time in my life. This was on my second time
when I played civ1, and both me and ai launched spaceships, and
ai's one reached Alpha Cetauri first.

I used to win all the time like this. It was my preferred method as it was a
pain to go around and mop everybody up. On more than one occasion I
had a real down-to the wire space race. Once I only won because I managed
to conquer his capital a turn before his spaceship got there (and three turns
before mine did.)
