I can see the reason to not draw these: you are trying to reduce clutter.

However, I use the visual image as a cue for which keys to press.  If I saw:

   X --- X
   |
   |
   X

I'd tend to press 'left' then 'down'.  Showing the diagonal gives me the
cue to press 'lower-left'.  It saves on finger wear-and-tear (yes, my
fingers/hand/arm has ached for days after marathon Civ sessions ;-)

Perhaps it could be configurable?
