I agree whole-heartedly with your opinions... I haven't said alot
about the recent discussion(s) because i do'nt regularly attend meetings
(actually, due to taking 18 credit hours, evening classes, taking care of
my son when my wife is at work and many, many, many other higher-priority
conflicts, i CAN'T make it)... I think the idea of having a closed list
is a bad one as: 1.) what if i only go on nites that interest me? i don't
want to waste a trip to wichita if we're going to talk about "foo" and i
really want to learn "bar"... 2.) what if someone joins the list and wants
to know what is going on in meetings so that they can determine whether or
not they want to attend? 3.) what if someone goes through a long period
of time where they can't regularly attend, yet they still want to know
what is going on in meetings?
i think this list is very exlusive and will only add to the feeling of
being lost when a newbie first attends (hell, i know i did)... not only
that, but why should someone be excluded from the list just because, say,
they have an evening class and have absolutely no way to attend? i think
that, especially at this stage, if someone wants to be involved, by all
means you should let them or else ACLUG will end up being a group of 10-15
friends and no newbies or anyone else interested in learning linux...
i've been on the ACLUG list for a few years and attended some meetings a
few years ago and have generally been much more impressed by the list, as
i've gotten very little out of the meetings... not to say that others
don't, i just find sitting behind a screen more comfortable than sitting
in a room w/ a group of strangers who barely acknowledge my existance...
anyway, it's been real and whatnot, but i think it's about time for me to
duck out and find a different newsgroup that doesn't discriminate against
people with busy lives... good luck to ACLUG in getting things figured
out... i have no bad blood or whatever... i'd like to see ACLUG suceed,
it's just that i can join any number of usergroups if i want to hear
discussion like i've heard lately (esp some of the insults that have been
thrown, albeit subtly)...
