yup, same here...

RedHat -> Debian -> Slackware -> FreeBSD

worked nicely for me ... each was a slight step harder than the previous
(FreeBSD mainly because I knew the Linux way of doing things which sometimes
differed)...  however, I'd suggest starting out w/ Mandrake...  just my
preference...  makes a nice workstation...
